Get Your Feet Wet

Resort guests over eight years old receive a complimentary introductory kitesurfing “taster,” which includes flying a trainer kite on the beach. Guests over the age of 16 have the option of taking lessons with a Certified Instructor.

Surf & Stay

Book Coconut Bay’s Surf and Stay packages and enjoy all-inclusive amenities plus hours of complete lessons during the course of your stay. Packages and pricing varies. Call for details.

Rentals

Coconut Bay’s Surf Shack has kitesurfing and windsurfing gear available for rental by the hour or day.

When to Come

Kitesurfing in St. Lucia is a seasonal sport with the best months for kitesurfing being November through July. The average wind speed is between 18 and 20 knots in the winter and 14 and 16 knots during off-peak season. Prior to your arrival feel free to Check the wind meter as to the current conditions.

Guests can make kitesurfing reservations* over the phone or at the Adventure St. Lucia Desk located in Coconut Bay’s lobby.

Lessons & Safety

Since safety is the first priority at Coconut Bay, the staff will personally evaluate your level of comfort on the water and ability to use the equipment to customize your course.
Has it been a while since your last water sports experience? Our coaching staff will be happy to accommodate any skill level and bring you up to speed, so you can be confident while on the water. Kiting is great for the whole family, and even beginners can learn over the course of five days. After the complimentary “taster” course, each student usually needs about 10 hours of lessons to become confident on the board.
At the completion of the course, you will receive an International Kiteboarding Organization (IKO) certification card.

Constant 15-25 knot northeast Atlantic winds from November to July make Coconut Bay’s Surf Shack the ideal location for all kiters. Freeride to freestyle, beginner to advanced. Take-off on the spectacular flat water inside the reef or ride the waves outside. Our professional IKO Certified instructors will ensure a sensational experience.

Rentals

If you like to travel light or don’t have your own gear, don’t worry we’ve got everything you need. The Coconut Bay Surf Shack is equipped with the latest gear for you to enjoy kitesurfing and windsurfing. Coconut Bay Surf Shack provides Naish equipment for lessons and rentals. For kitesurfing we offer the 2016 Pivots and a wide range of boards, from twin tips to surfboards. For windsurfing we offer Naish Rally sails, and RRD boards that will service all skill levels….beginner, freestyle or wave.

Coconut Bay’s kitesurfing guests are also welcome to bring their own gear. For a $20 Daily Facility Fee, the resort will provide equipment storage, assisted launching, boat rescue and supervision.

Beginner Lessons: Zero to Hero

Prerequisites:

You should be able to swim and have an average fitness level.

Course Goals/What You Will Learn:

All the skill you need to be a safe and independent kitesurfer. You will learn about the equipment, understanding the wind, basic kite flying skills, body dragging and how to get on the board and riding properly. Upon completion you will earn your IKO Certification Card.

The Course Breakdown:
  1. First Stage (3 Hours) – How the wind works; Safety Assessment; Gear Assembly; Kite Flying Skills.
  2. Second Stage (3 Hours) – Figure-8; Body drag with Powerstroke; Launch, Relaunch and Land kite; Board Recovery.
  3. Third Stage (3 Hours) – Body Position; First Water Starts; Controlling Your Speed using the edge.

Intermediate Lessons: Refresh & Ride

Prerequisites:

You should be able to body drag. You should have general knowledge of kite, equipment and board control.

Course Goals/What You Will Learn:
  • Refresh – Gear assembly; Safety assessment; Launch, relaunch and land kite; Body drag with powerstroke; Board recovery.
  • And Ride – Body position, First water starts, Controlling your speed using the edge, Going upwind.
The Course Breakdown:
  1. Our instructors will review the important details of rigging your gear and the safety procedures, just to refresh what you have already learned.
  2. Your rider level will be assessed at the beginning of the course prior to assisting you in becoming confident and in control of waterstarts.
  3. With precise instruction and the correct progression of exercises, we will guide you on all the basics until you are completely comfortable and independent riding in both directions and working to stay upwind.

Advanced Lessons: Fun & Fly

  • US $80 per hour
  • Take advantage of our outstanding surf conditions to improve your riding level and add some new tricks in your repertoire.
Prerequisites:

To improve your performance, you have to be an independent rider skilled at total kite and board control. You should be able to go upwind! Each rider’s skills will be assessed prior to moving forward with advanced lessons. Before booking this course you should be able perform water starts and feel fairly comfortable, safe and independent.

Course Goals/What You Will Learn:
  • Our goal is to improve your complete riding skill set with advanced training on transitions, jumps, rotations, toeside riding, chop hops, etc.
  • We can also teach you to ride waves using a surfboard or trying your first unhooked tricks.

  1. Rider Assessment; Safety Assessment;
  2. Basic Jumps, Transitions and Rotations,
  3. Advanced Progressions, Grabs, Spins and Loops

Arrival by Airplane

St. Lucia has two international airports. Hewanorra International Airport at Vieux Fort (airport code: UVF) is recommended for Coconut Bay guests, as it is five minutes away from the resort and airport transfers are offered free of charge.

Arrival by Car

George F. L. Charles Airport (airport code: SLU) is about one hour north of Coconut Bay by car. Taxi transfers are available at a cost of approximately EC$120 for 2-4 people.
