Sercotel Club, Sol Cayo Guillermo, Cuba, is one of the greatest kitesurfing spots in the Caribbean!

Sercotel Club resort accommodation and restaurants are divided into a common (less well maintained) area and a brand-new-looking adults-only area. If you are not staying at Sercotel for the kiteboarding you may be disappointed with the common area restaurant and accommodation.

The kiteboarding experience available along the Cayo Guillermo beach just in front of the Sercotel Club is absolutely extraordinary. We stayed from November 21-28, 2016, and had sufficient wind to kitesurf every single day. Only two light wind days required bigger 15m+ size kites. Every other day was good for 9-12m size kites.

The Cayo Guillermo beach is outstanding, all-of-it! Apparently, they recently imported sand, extending the width of the beach by about 30 yards (this extension is across the entire length of the beach, in front of all the resorts, along the stretch up to Play Pillar). Spacious white sand offers more than enough room for all kites, launching and landing. Cayo Guillermo is a kiteboarding DREAM beach – but, especially in front of Sercotel Club. We found kiters staying in the other resorts nearby all agreed that the best launch spot was right here.

There are 3 or 4 resorts along the Cayo Guillermo beach, but for beginning kiteboarders, Sercotel Club has the best location of them all as the ocean is very shallow, and smooth for about 30 yards out from the beach. When the tide is in the ocean in front of the other hotels can get deep, with waves and chop – making the learning curve a little more challenging for novices trying to stay upwind.

The Beach

The panorama in this listing shows the beach from last year. The beach is now MASSIVE! The beach has recently been filled in with about 30 yards of beautiful white sand reaching from the end of the grass/tree line to the beginning of the ocean. This new beach extends for miles, from Sercotel Club all the way up to Playa Pillar. There is space for hundreds of kites launching and landing all along the beachline.

The Secret Spot #1

The secret spot is visible from the Sercotel Club beach, you can sometimes see lots of other kiteboarders over there, but it can appear to be so far away from it has at times been mistaken for Cayo Coco. The secret spot is not, however, that far away.

About 200-300 yards out from the Sercotel Club beach is miles of very shallow, very flat, very soft water. This is the perfect place to practice kitesurf basics, as well as experiment with more extreme tricks, and get big air with jumps, etc. See the satellite map in the gallery. As a beginner, the challenge to getting to the secret spot is finding the courage to cross the channel. The channel is deep, and has a strong undercurrent, and if you lose your board you could be body dragging for 20-30 mins.

Also, the movement of the current appears to slow your wind speed – I think, your board is moving in the current along with the kite in the wind, so wind appears to die over the channel, and that can make it slow to cross and difficult for keeping upwind. As a result, the channel can be intimidating for beginners. But…

For those willing to risk crossing the channel the other side holds kiteboarding nirvana. For miles, the water is very shallow (knee to ankle deep, and sometimes less depending on the tide), very flat, and the ground underwater is in places very, very soft mud – perfect for practicing basic or advanced tricks. You’re not going to lose your board, need to body drag, or get hurt crashing into the water. So, go for it! Plus, with miles of kiteboarding nirvana there is more than enough space for anyone riding in the area. You’ll worry less about crossing lines, and spend all your time getting your flow on.

The Secret Spot #2

The second secret spot is on the other side of the bridge that you ride in on from the airport. The bridge blocks the wind and the waves, leaving the ocean flat as glass. You can ride zig, zag, across the ripple free water, in between, or over, all the mangroves. However, getting there is initially a bit tricky. You have to kite down to the bridge, then get out of the water and walk the kite over the bridge (keeping the kite in the air all the time) and be careful of any passing vehicles.

On the other side, where the water is so flat and smooth, be careful not to drop the kite, as re-launching from the surface can be tricky, since the bridge has blocked wind at the lower level. Kites can be relaunched – it’s not a show stopper. But, this secret spot is certainly not for the novices.

Why Sercotel Club is #1 Resort in Cayo Guillermo, Cuba, for Beginning Kitesurfers!

Since secret spot #1 is a distance from the main beach this is another reason why Sercotel Club has the best location of all the resorts in Cayo Guillermo. From Sercotel Club, getting to and from secret spot #1 takes a little time, and a little work depending on how well you can edge back upwind. Making the trip to secret spot #1 from Iberostar Daiquiri, the next nearest resort, requires more time, and a bigger commitment. Making the trip any of the other resorts further on up the main beach is probably unlikely for beginners. I would say that secret spot #1 is one of the best reason for beginners to kiteboard in Cayo Guillermo, and as such that makes Sercotel Club the #1 resort for beginners too.

Right beside Sercotel Club is the Havana Kiteboarding Club. HKC offers IKO courses, kite trips, a kite village (accommodation) and holiday packages.

Jet-Ski Support

One of the significant benefits of kitesurfing on the Cayo Guillermo beach is the jet-ski support. Lifeguards monitor the ocean from the beach using binoculars, and call in the jet-ski if they spot a kitesurfer in trouble. The service is not provided by the resorts. The service is provided by the nearby marina. You will likely be asked to pay $25 USD/week for the jet-ski support service. One of my friends, who had paid the 25 USD, was rescued when in distress. So, the service worked for him. I was in trouble, and really could have used jet-ski support on 3 different occasions during the week. But, they never came to help. That said, I learned to self-rescue as a result.

Update on Jet-Ski Support – after returning for another trip to Sercotel Club in March 2017 I found myself with a equipment malfunction while in the channel.  My entire kite deflated, and I couldn’t get back to shore.  Jet-Ski support never came to the rescue and I was visibly struggling for over an hour.  Eventually, I asked another kiterboarder to assist me, and we body dragged together back to shore.  When I discussed this with Jet-Ski officials the next day they said:

• They do not work after 4pm.
• They do not operate in the channel near the bridge.

Keep this in mind, and ask about the service conditions when Jet-Ski officials ask you to pay the $25 USD.

Wakeboarding Park (Coming Soon!)

Another incredible development is the construction of a wakeboarding cable-park (near secret spot #2) not very far from Secrotel Club. The park was expected to be operational by the end of April 2017. When the park officially opens expect Cayo Guillermo to become the most popular destination in Cuba for kiteboarding – as any no-wind days will become wakeboarding cable-park days, and there literally will be no rest for the wicked!

Firstly the rooms were horrible we had to change our rooms more than twice. We had zero hot water bed bugs, cockroaches, mold, frogs, lizards, and obviously mosquitoes. The bathrooms and windows had huge cracks in it which many mosquitoes and other creatures would enter from. Most of the stuff in the room were very dirty, old and broken. The food was very bland and had zero options. The entertainment was okay, nothing special. The beach was gorgeous, beautiful view and everything. The only bad thing about the beach was that it was filled with rocks. This is our 12th time coming to Cuba and this was the worst resort by far. Overall very bad experience don’t recommend, instead pay a few extra hundred dollars for a better hotel.read more

Customer service is lacking except for the customer service manager she does what she can besides that they tend to server the locals before the other guest food ran low each day. House keeping was not done beds not changed washroom no cleaned had ants all over the sink. first night found water all over the floor of the cottage. No help after slipping on the floor telling me to go to medical I have issue with knee wear a brace and walk with a cane had to go management even go to My room with assistance from desk. wouldn't recommend it at all. Well - not the newest, not the modernisbut it has high quality of personal, service and a great atmosphere and that´s important for me. I had the good fortune to stay at the CCG between February 13-28. This was my first time at an all-inclusive place and I must say I was very satisfied. I had traveled nearly all over the, probably over 40 countries, so I was hesitant to go all-inclusive. This place is Amazing in every way. We stayed in the Bungalow area and it couldn't have beenore perfect. So quiet, relaxing, clean, friendly service and the dining room staff were the best I have ever encountered! Food eas the best I ever had in Cuba!Cesar, Eddwin, Nizar were the management that made sure every detail of our 2 week vacation was perfect. Our maid Marisol was phenomenal and had such a great sense of humor decorating with our towels each day.The resort and beach is amazingly clean with new loungers and walkways.The maintenance staff work constantly to upgrade and improve the resort . This is a perfect place if you ever wanted to go to the Maldives islands but cannot.The Staff are all very well spoken and astute. All employees seem very happy and are eager to serve at all times. First of all, I would like to say that the view, landscape and the beach are all fantastic. The the food is actually really good. I did not go hungry in the entire week that I spent there. I think you really get your money's worth with everything that the hotel offers. The hotel room is good (needs some updating) but I know that they are currently updating it anyways because they have been painting and fixing the structures. Overall, its not bad and its even quite beautiful. The hotel staff are the heart of this establishment. They are all so nice and kind and very welcoming. Some staff the stood out to me the most is Micheal from entertainment. He really cares for the people and does his job well. The afternoon games, beach parties and nightly entertainment are really fun and entertaining. Another staffs that stood out are Yulia and Rosie from cocktail bar and ala carte restaurant. They are really nice and always have a smile on their faces. They are very hardworking and respectful. Lastly, was the older gentleman that works in landscape --(i forgot his name but he always waters the plants)-- he is amazing and he is such a sunshine. i loved this place and will definitely come back.read more

Just got back from two weeks kiteboarding and I absolutely loved this place!The staff was beyond nice and felt like family.I also enjoyed the accommodations. Instead of small hotel rooms with hallways we each had our own little “mini villas (separate bungalows that each contain two hotel rooms with private patios) right close to the beach. Cesar, the general manager has done an incredible job of making a basic three star,resort feel like a five star!Also the entertainment was over the top! Live music, rock bands, and water shows put much more expensive resorts I’ve been to, to shame. I don’t wish to oversell this resort (the food is good but by no means gourmet lol) and the rooms need an update ( coming this year we are told) but if you are looking for an awesome place to learn kiteboarding (or just to chill) then this amazing value resort, can’t be beat!read more

I stayed at the hotel in May and it was such a wonderful experience. The friends I made will last a lifetime and for that, I’ll forever be grateful. Visited this place in July 2019. All I have to say, good thing I had a bug spray...mosquitoes eat you alive if you have no protection. Most of the stuff are friendly and welcoming. I normally go to Varadero and this time around decided to try something new, since people I know have recommended this place. I am not picky person and I must say food was repetitive and not much selection. The weirdest part is lobby bar would not serve alchohol 12-10a.m. ; morning wouldn't bother me but at 1 am when you with friends get told that no more alcohol is a big let down. Generally hotel is in good shape for Cuba and just minor fixes are needed. When you get bored from hotel there is not much going on around there, only spot worth attending to is Playa Pilar.read more

I will definately not travel to cuba again. It would make a ton more sense to just stay home and save the money. The resort was run down, but okay. The staff were horrible. If they didn't get tipped, they wouldn't provide any service whatsoever. If we're choosing to spend our money to stay in their country, it WOULD be nice if they could make sure there's a clean table and clean dishes for us to eat, instead of standing in the corner watching us struggle. Mexico was only a little bit more expensive, but i'd much rather go there, where they appreciate the business and treat us amazing.read more

The resort was small and quiet. A perfect place to relax. The weather was beyond perfect - warm and sunny. Entertainment staff Michael and Angie made us feel like family and ensured we could have the full resort experience. First of all I never write reviews, but after this experience I hope I can help in assuring others don’t have to waste their time and money on this resort. I went with my girlfriend and family for a week and there is very little that would make me ever want to return. The rooms were not ready upon arrival, and AC did not work. Not only did we find multiple frogs and lizards in our room every day, but we would ask for the AC to be repaired or switch rooms over multiple days with no progress or help. They would just leave knowing they couldn’t fix it and constantly brush us off. The male customer service representative was absolutely terrible. He was rude, unorganized and didn’t have any answers to any issues besides come back in the morning so he wouldn’t have to deal with you. We were unable to book any reservations at any of the restaurants because it was over booked. We only were given a reservation after complaining about our room. When we did go to the restaurant it was practically empty, and half of the dishes on the menu they said they didn’t have. The buffet constantly had a shortage of cutlery and plates. I was not expecting anything special food wise either way. Although I expected to at least be waitered. I would bring my own water to the buffet because no one would come over to us during the entire dinner/lunch/breakfast.They favour those who speak Spanish, and older guests. Which I was neither of.The beach was nice no doubt, and if you have any interest in Kite boarding that’s definetly one of the plus sides. But aside from that the bars were running out of wine almost every day, and since the only other bar closed before night fall, if you wanted a drink you would be forced to wait in a 10-15 min line every time. Unless you tip ridiculously the service is straight up awful.If you are contemplating between this resort or one more expensive, please understand it is definitely worth it to go somewhere else and spend more. I wish I could rate it less than one star realistically.read more

I'll start with the positives. We are here for two weeks. If you find and tip the right people you will have a much better time getting service at either meal time or getting drinks. Our wooden bungalow is nice and the beach is awesome. The food is good and we met a lot of great people who will be friends for life. Negative...the mosquitoes are unbearable. Our room only has 3 outlets, which doesn't sound like a big deal but 1 for the fridge, 1 for the tv and the other is in the bathroom that we use for charging cameras etc. Room is very dark. Service is really slow especially when people order coffee. Overall a good vacation. Rent a scooter! So much funread more

Remember, this is one of the lowest cost resorts, so you can't compare it to the resort that you paid twice as much for. Keep your expectations low, and you won't be disappointed. You will even be surprised how nice this place is if you come in with an open mind. Yes, the place is older and a bit run down. But that's from all the hurricanes they keep experiencing. Some things in the room don't work, but they are very quick to resolve your issue. The staff are super friendly, even the ones who can't speak English. The food selection changes from day to day. The shows are entertaining at night. They do close the restaurants, not 24 hours, but you adapt. Again this is $100's of dollars per person cheaper than anything 3 star. They do run out of dishes, just don't go when everyone else goes to eat. Again, adapt to the situation. People are quick to complain about everything they don't like, but remember this is not a 1st world country, and you did cheap out and find the cheapest 3 star. For the price I paid, it was well beyond what I expected.read more

Lobby is fine as is the restaurant and show stage. Food is below average for other Cuban resorts I have been to. My room is very basic and needs to have the shower tiles reset and re-grouted. Furniture is old and needs replacing. It appears to have been recently painted but poorly done with little regard to detail. The hotel is transitioning between owners and hopefully the new owner will do a lot of much needed renovations.read more

It's a satisfactory resort with okay food - you can't go wrong with the seafood and grilled meats here. Its right in between two great beaches: Playa Pilar and Playa Flamenco which is in the hotel bus route. The resort is geared more for windsurfers due to the constant strong winds so there isn't a lot of snorkeling or other wildlife to explore.read more

We just went on a trip with the whole family and stayed over for two night's. First off I have to say that I cannot understand after reading some of the reviews here how can someone rate this hotel with more than a single start. - Main pool closed completely abandoned. - No amenities available. - Front desk staff very rude. - Rooms a complete disaster, AC unit leaking water constantly, dirty walls, Shower water very limited. - The only restaurant available was on the other end of the resort. - You had to wait by the grill area at least for 10 minutes because they don't have enough plates for you to serve your food.- You could see perched flies on the desserts table.- Beer was never cold.- My daughter wanted ice cream along with some other family members and there were only two spoons available. (Unbelievable ).- The beach was really nice that I have to admit. Therefore I personally do not recommend anyone to visit this place. -read more

Clean rooms. Awesome Beach. Great staffHotel has everything you need. Staff are friendly and helpful. Rooms are good sized and clean. Best section of beach in Cayo Guillermo. You can walk out 1/2 mile and still be only up to your waist. Nice sandy bottom and huge beach. Lots of sunbeds and pergolas available. Pools are amazing. Pool bar is close by and they make great Cuban sandwiches at the snack bar. Great job. Great nightly entertainment. Lobby Bar/Lounge features local musicians nightly before the main shows at 9:30. I normally don't do reviews on places I stay, because I am not a fussy person because I am going to such a beautiful place, Cuba. But please beware that the photos of this hotel is not what it looks like at all. I just came back from my week stay on Thursday, and me and my friend were very disappointed in what we had to stay in. Booking two rooms because we booked separately we went into both rooms and was shocked about what we had paid for to be there. Not having clean towels, the walls and floors looked like they were never cleaned, and the fridge wouldn't work also the air conditioner didn't work and we didn't have a toilet seat. After making the decision about just staying together in the cleanest room we could find the front desk staff was beyond rude to us and favoured people that could talk Spanish, which I didn't and was learning how to. The serving staff picked the older people to serve that left us the younger ones that still where going to tip have to hunt people down just to get water. This place is not for younger people to stay at, or if they want to dance which it says they have a "disco" which they don't. Besides the resort I was inlove with the beach and the walk out deck. But before you spend money on this resort please read the reviews, which we didn't.read more

We stayed in the bungalow with sea view. The hotel looks really cheap and old, it has not been renovated since years. The restaurant is quite disappointing, food below average, service really poor. We had lots of. Mosquitos in the room and we needed two hours to kill them. One day we found a frog in the bath, which than jumped in the room,hiding there. Another day a tubation in the cleaning closet next to our room exploded: our room was flooded, we complained at the reception, but only two hours later arrived the woman two clean the 3cm water on the ground in the room. Thanks God our staff was on the bed.. Or it would be all wet. Animation is OK, but only in the main hotel part. In the bungalow part there is no animation, a pool without music and a small bar open only a couple of hours a day. I would say the hotel is maximum 2 stars, not 4. Lots of Russians and Mexicans as customers. The only beautiful thing: the beach.read more

We just finished a week's stay in Cayo Guillermo, relaxed and enjoyed the resort and all it had to offer. The positives are strong. The location is stunning alongside an untouched beach which is perfect for kite surfing. Every morning we would sit and watch hundreds of kites racing up and down the shallow waters, and in the afternoon would venture out learning the trade under the guidance of Matteo, Luis and the Havana kite surfing school.The hotel entertainment staff laid on a variety of daily excursions including swimming with dolphins, speed boating, and horse riding. They couldn't have been more friendly. However the resort does look a little tired in places (albeit there was a hurricane last year and still repairs and being made). Lots of plastic in the bars and restaurants seems a little outdated and cheapens the experience .Lastly and not least, they need someone to come in and take control of the food. I am sure people would be very happy to pay more for a higher quality. We learnt to choose well and the other upsides of the resort balanced the frustration that the food and elements of the service need refreshing.All in all very good value for money and there is scope for improvementread more

Beware this resort caters to kite boarders. Thus the beach can be windy at times and covered in kites. If coming for kite boarding its amazing as it's a great place to learn with shallow water and an abundance of experienced kiters and instructors. For a non-kite board vacations would recommend another resort as this one is most popular with kite boarders due to it's location. The rooms and food is below average compared to the competing resort surrounding it.read more

I’m giving this hotel 5 stars even though there are a few cons. It’s listed as a three to four star hotel and in reality it’s no more than 3. But...it doesn’t pretend to be so can’t blame them for that. The accommodations are just ok and they are rebuilding as best they can after Irma. The food is so so. I wouldn’t bother trying the restaurants. Bring peanut butter and hot sauce. All that being said, 50% of the guests are there for the beach and the kiting. For that, it is second to none. The spot is incredible!!! If you are learning to kite this is a dream spot. Close, cheap and everything you need to improve your riding. Internet is horrible. Bring plenty to watch on a tablet and only eat cooked veggies. Stay away from the fruit and raw veg. Overall will definitely go back there.read more

I have been there for 5 months, working as kite instructor and personally I will NEVER go there again. Beach and see are just amazing but the hotel is unbelievable. It should be 4 stars resort but i had better time on 1 star hostels.The resort is dirty( restaurant, pools, rooms)And they didn't clean my room averyday because they found the excuses that my room was out of service.Once a month the toilet stop working and I couldn't flush anymore otherwise water would come out from the toilet.. tha happend once and I was busy to work, so I asked many times to the reception to fix the problem but no one never came. In the end I fixed by myself.The only time I saw someone cleaning the restaurant was when the inspection was coming and the were cleaning the tables with a little piece of paper and that is it! They never wash the floor in fact when you walk there you shoes got stuck.Some people working there are super nice: the woman working as omelet maker, Lazaro(waiter), julio(gardener and hang man, actually he was the best). All the cocks were super nice as well, except Ernesto( guy who looks like George Clooney): he asked many times to my girlfriend to leave me and ho with him or to come back next year without me(all that in a cheeky way until my girlfriend has been rude with him and he stopped say anything). That wasn't just with my girlfriend but with many and many girls and I couldn't say anything because I had to keep my job.In the end I suggest to avoid seefotel! If you want to have a great time in Cayo gulliermo you must choose a different resort.. there are many and with different prices.The only good thing of that resort is that there is a kite school and the kite spot is absolutely amazing. Personally I never write reviews, but that time was so horrible that I don't want you to have a bad experience as mine. I wish I could rate 0 starsread more

10 out of 10 in every way. Most beautiful beach I have ever seen. Food is fantastic, and the facilities (pools, rental gear, chairs, towels) and customer service is perfect.

We have stayed here for 2 nights. We were little dissapointed that main area was closed but anyway... recepction staff was helpful and helped us get a good deal on a taxi to the airport. Buffet restaurant was small, not a big choice of food variety but was tasty. We were also bitten by some sand flies/bed bugs(or whatever that was) in our room. Nice shows in the evenings. Very disappointed in the amount of hiccups and poor service we received. I have to say though, the restaurant and bar staff were fabulous. As for everything else, it was enough to make us want to go home early. We arrived after 11pm and obviously tired from travelling. We were sent to the wrong room (had paid extra for bungalow but was taken to a standard apartment-style room), and went right back to reception only to be told "Come back tomorrow to fix it." So we said fine, it's late and we're tired, and we slept in the room for the night. Headed back to the lobby at 9am to "fix it" and we're told there were no clean rooms available. We decided to upgrade to the "Adult Club" on the other side of the resort in hopes this would help, and were told to check back at in an hour. An hour turned into 12pm, which turned into 3pm, and was eventually 4:30pm when we got to our room (meanwhile, we had been sitting poolside with our suitcases all day). When we arrived in our room, most of the amenities you pay extra for to upgrade to the "elite" club weren't even given (mini bar, water bottles, beach towels). Needless to say, our first 24 hours were very aggravating. We were also without running water for a day (and I mean NO running water, which included our toilets!) and did not have clean towels for 3 days (I don't mind reusing the same towel two or three days in a row by any means, but when I say we had no clean towels, I actually mean we did not have ANY towels). We had issues with our electric lock to get into the room and we're locked out multiple times a day, and kept being told if we put our key card too close to our phones they would deactivate. They rolled their eyes and issued new key cards each time, but as the week went on realized that it was in fact a batter issue with the door. All of this would maybe have been easily brushed off if not for the poor communication and attempt at customer service by the staff. I would have appreciated if someone had maybe told us "hey just to let you know, a pipe burst and we don't have running water, but there's a crew working on it now, sorry for the inconvenience," instead of having used toilets in our room only to have that dreadful realization it's not flushing. When we brought up the issue (actually, every time we went to ask about an issue) we were always given the same answers - "I don't know" and "Come back later".Along the way I wondered if there's just a staff shortage, or if this was an attitude issue. Although the restaurant and bar staff were the friendliest people on the resort, we did have many occasions where we'd walk into the buffet-style dining area and were unable to find cleared tables to sit at, and at times we had finished our whole meal without seeing a server come by to take our drink orders. Cuba is beautiful beyond words and I plan on returning as it will always be my favourite Caribbean destination, but I will never return to this resort and will not recommend this to anyone.read more
